Saint Odelia: Through Darkness & Into the Light
MEDIEVAL SAINT LEGEND
This is a stunning story of Saint Odelia, patron saint of the Alsace region of France. It is one of the most beautiful legends from the Middle Ages.
Odelia is born blind, left to die by her impatient father and raised by sisters in a nearby convent. She grows to be a strings thirteen year old and when baptized, miraculously regains her sight.
She finds and confronts her father and a powerful battle of strong wills ensues, not unlike that of many teens and parents today.
This is a wonderful tale and beautiful reminder for the young filled with touching moments and evidence of the transformative power of love.
When you are beginning to be caught in the in-between of no longer completely a child, and not yet completely an adult, with emotions that run high, a tale like this might be just what you need.
The legend of Saint Odelia ends with her establishing the convent still named after her today: Odilienberg.
WHY SAINT STORIES
Saint stories abound in Waldorf second grade classes as this is the time when most 8 and 9 year-olds find their independent and adventurous side, with a bit of mischievousness here and there. Saint stories can mirror these features while also being archetypes for heroic actions, courage, honor, good deeds standing up for others and doing the right thing.
