Kindergarten Paintbrushes, Short Cow Hair Bristles-Waldorf Preferred
SHORT COW HAIR PAINT BRUSH FOR PRIMARY GRADES
It’s difficult for young children to keep a long handled paint brush properly balanced in their small hands. With this in mind, we’ve included a special, shorter and wider handled brush for Kindergartners and Preschoolers, as well as for first and second graders who aren’t quite ready to make the leap to a long paint brush.
The brush has soft bristles made of cow hair, a rust-proof, closed ferrule, is made of certified sustainable wood and comes in three sizes: #18, #20 and #22.
WHICH BRUSH SIZE
The #22 paintbrush has an 8.66”long handle with a 0.87” wide brush. This brush will produce a 1” wide brush stroke and can cover large areas. This is great for kids aged 3 to 4 who haven’t refined their fine motor skills yet.
The #20 and #18 also have an 8.66” long handle. The #20 produces a 7/8” wide brush stroke and the #18 produces about a 3/4” brushstroke. The #20 was made with Kindergartners in mind but is also often used in first grade. The #18 is a transition brush for first or second graders with longer hands but still prefer a shorter brush.
IF YOU CAN ONLY BUY ONE – WHICH ONE?
Any of the three brushes work, but if you need just one brush that wOrks for preschool, kindergarten and into first grade, we recommend the #20.
If you don’t mind obtaining a set of all sizes over time, we recommend starting with a #22 in Preschool and then adding a #20 for Kindergarten or First grade and a #18 for First to Second Grade.

WHY THESE ARE HIGH-QUALITY BRUSHES
Our full FSC brushes are made of German cow hair, and/or Ilthis (polecat) hair and have a birch wooden handle finished in a white wax. The ferrule is closed and rust proof, if taken care of properly.
The wood is obtained from responsible and controlled forestry in Germany and the Baltic States. The wax used to impregnate the wood is entirely from natural ingredients. The big advantage of this “coating” is that water and paint do not adversely affect the handle and damage it.
The handle has a nice natural “look” and a good grip. The bristles are soft, flexible and retain their shape, have a high uptake capacity and are ideally suited for all techniques of watercolour painting.
If these quality brushes are used, cleaned and stored properly, they last for years without loss of hair and/or form.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BRUSH
Do not use synthetic and chemical products when painting or cleaning. Just rinse under the tap with lukewarm (not hot) water.
It is most important to let the brush hang to dry, with the bristles down. In this way, you give the water time to drain out of the brush so that the glue is not dissolved in the ferrule, which attaches the hair to the handle. Leaving the brush soaking in water will eventually dissolve the glue and loosen the brush hairs!
